Challenge #6

I went to Omaha this last weekend. There was a good amount of time where my friends were on the public hammocks and I had stayed at a bench. I could have gone on my phone while I waited for them to come back, but I took this opportunity to look around. I noticed that there was a family of four, two daughters and a mother and father. The mom had one of the girls in a headlock and they were laughing uncontrollably and the father and other daughter were play fighting as well. They eventually all fell onto the grass and went to go inside the children’s museum following. This was a really beautiful moment that I witnessed and I knew it would be a core memory for the kids. It was really special to see a family really bond like that and it reminded me of my childhood as well.

I would have completely missed this moment if my eyes were glued to my phone. It made me feel warm and fuzzy inside and had me reflecting on how special it was to have those types of moments as a kid, and to be able to come back here as an adult and have a completely different experience, that was still very special.

This road trip, I have had many chances to go on my phone and distance myself from my friends in the car or in public. After completing the first 5 challenges in Cedar Falls, I wanted to continue the journey in Omaha. I have become aware of my cell phone usage more than I ever have in my life, which is an accomplishment.
